18+ only (21+ in some jurisdictions). Play within your means.
Overlog is written for adults aged 18 and over. A handful of jurisdictions push that floor to 21, notably parts of the United States and several Asia-Pacific territories, and where the higher age applies it always overrides ours. If you, or anybody sharing your household, has already signed on to a national self-exclusion register, honour that decision here as well.
Warning signs the fun has turned into a problem
Problem gambling almost never announces itself. It gathers pace slowly, one small habit at a time, until the pattern is difficult to break. Read the list below carefully, whether you are checking on your own play or on somebody you love. A single tick is grounds to step back for a week; two or more, and it is time to use the caps, cooling-off tools and helplines further down this page. For a wider look at pacing play against a fixed pot, read our bankroll management basics.
- The budget keeps drifting. A tenner for the evening becomes fifty, then a hundred, then "one more reload to see it through".
- Chasing what you have lost. Logging in mainly to claw back yesterday's downswing rather than to enjoy the games themselves.
- Play going underground. Deleting operator emails, wiping browser history, being cagey with a partner about how much has actually gone in.
- Borrowed money in the pot. Credit cards, overdrafts, buy-now-pay-later plans, payday loans or a favour from a friend, any of these fuelling deposits is a bright red line.
- Sleep and mood suffering. Restless nights replaying the last session, snapping at people over small things, feeling flat when you are not near the phone.
- Home life fraying. Bills left unpaid, tense conversations about money, skipping family plans to keep a session running.
- The rest of life going quiet. Hobbies, exercise and friendships you used to make time for slowly dropping off the calendar.
If any of that rings true, treat the next section as a checklist rather than a suggestion. Five minutes spent setting caps today is worth infinitely more than the same conversation with yourself after a heavy loss.
Deposit caps, loss caps, session timers and cool-off
Every licensed operator we cover, whether it answers to the UKGC, MGA, Spelinspektionen, KSA, Spillemyndigheden, ANJ, GRAI, SRIJ or ACMA, must expose the controls below inside your account. Since the tightening of European and Australian rules through 2024 and 2025, no compliant site can bury them. Set them the moment you register, not after a bad session has already forced the issue.
- Deposit cap. A hard ceiling on what you can top up in a day, a week or a month. Pick a figure you would shrug off losing in full.
- Loss cap. Halts play automatically the second net losses over the period reach the limit you chose, a sturdy floor beneath the deposit cap.
- Session timer and reality check. Ends the session, or throws a pop-up you have to click through, after the number of minutes you set.
- Wager or stake cap. Caps the total amount staked over a window regardless of how much you happen to be winning along the way.
- Cool-off. Locks the account for anything from 24 hours to six weeks, no ID or waiting queue, one click and it is done.
- Single-site self-exclusion. Shuts the account with that one operator for six months, twelve months, five years or forever.
Tightening a cap kicks in straight away. Loosening one is deliberately slowed by law, usually a 24-hour or seven-day cool-down, so a decision taken in the heat of a losing streak cannot overwrite the one you took with a clear head. Pair the caps with an honest weekly budget, our bankroll management guide walks through the arithmetic step by step.
National self-exclusion registers, market by market
Closing a single account only redirects the problem to whichever site you sign up for next. A national self-exclusion register locks you out of every licensed operator in the country from one form. Enrolment is free, kept private and legally binding on the operators. The table below sums up the schemes covering the markets Overlog reviews.
| Country | Scheme | What it blocks | Length | Where to sign up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | GamStop | Every UKGC-licensed online casino and bookmaker | 6 months, 1 year or 5 years | gamstop.co.uk |
| Sweden | Spelpaus | Every operator holding a Swedish (SGA) licence | 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, or open-ended | spelpaus.se (BankID required) |
| Netherlands | Cruks (Centraal Register Uitsluiting Kansspelen) | Every KSA-licensed online casino as well as physical venues | At least 6 months, with no cap on extensions | cruks.nl (DigiD required) |
| Denmark | ROFUS (Register Over Frivilligt Udelukkede Spillere) | Every operator licensed by Spillemyndigheden | 1, 3 or 6 months, or for good | rofus.nu (MitID required) |
| France | Stop-Jeu / Interdiction Volontaire de Jeu (via ANJ) | Every ANJ-licensed operator along with the FDJ retail network | Three years at the least | joueurs-info-service.fr · service-public.fr |
| Ireland | Per-operator exclusion + a Gambling Regulatory Authority scheme (being introduced) | Each licensee separately; a national register under GRAI arriving in stages | From 6 months, often up to permanent | Straight through each operator; check grai.ie for news |
| Australia | BetStop | Every Australian-licensed online wagering provider | From 3 months up to a lifetime | betstop.gov.au |
Once your name is on one of these registers, resist the urge to look for a loophole. The whole point of the scheme is to remove the choice while your head is clear, so a shakier moment weeks or months down the line cannot undo the decision.

Helping someone else, and using objective data
If the worry is about a partner, parent or friend rather than yourself, there are concrete steps you can take without waiting to be asked. Blocking apps such as Gamban and BetBlocker install on phones, tablets and PCs to shut off gambling sites and native apps at the device level. Banks in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, France and Portugal all now offer a one-tap gambling block on debit and credit cards, usually inside the mobile banking app. And do call the helplines listed above, every one of them takes calls from concerned relatives as gladly as from players.
One more thing that helps a hard conversation stay grounded: objective numbers. Our Payout Log records actual withdrawal times and dispute outcomes across the sites we test, so if the person you are worried about insists a particular casino "always pays out fast", you have real data to hold the claim up against. Facts cool arguments down.
Frequently asked questions
Is a national self-exclusion register really binding on the casino? Yes. Once you appear on GamStop, Spelpaus, Cruks, ROFUS, Stop-Jeu, BetStop or the SRIJ auto-exclusion list, every operator holding the matching licence is legally obliged to refuse your registrations and block deposits for the term you chose. Failure to enforce it is a licensing offence, not just poor customer service.
Will self-exclusion damage my credit score? No. Self-exclusion registers are not linked to credit bureaux and do not appear on any credit file. Banks that operate a gambling block on your card treat the toggle the same way, invisibly to any lender you apply to later.
Can I sign up to a self-exclusion scheme in a country I do not live in? Usually only if you can log in with the local electronic ID (BankID for Spelpaus, DigiD for Cruks, MitID for ROFUS). If you cannot, your realistic options are per-operator self-exclusion and a global blocking tool such as Gamban.
What if I relapse after self-excluding? That is exactly why the schemes exist and why the tools listed above have your back on top of them. Reach a helpline the same day, extend or reinstate the exclusion, and let someone close to you know, isolation makes relapse worse, not better.
